"For you, a thousand times over"

A statement of brotherhood found in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini has led me to reflect on the strength of friendship. Friends..one shouldn't confuse them with people who have simply crossed path with you in life..like classmates, colleagues, teachers...some of those you call "friends" will pass you by but true friends, i believe and hope, will be people you will call upon even after graduation.

Count yourself blessed if you have met a "Hassan" in your life.

Alert: SPOILER AHEAD :|

"For you, a thousand times over." This is said by Hassan to Amir as Hassan runs his last kite, the prized blue one that would earn Amir his Baba's praises.

However, Hassan got into trouble on his encounter with the villains in the story when he caught the blue kite. Amir only watched in hiding, as his friend...his brother got raped.

Some of us will scorn at Amir's cowardice. Think again. If we were to put ourselves in Amir's shoes, how many of us would actually rush forward to aid our friend and be a brother in times of great adversity?

What would you do for a friend as such? For you, a thousand times over...

We have a friend whose birth is celebrated in about a week's time. For us he has borne the shame, a thousand times over. If this friend who you barely know appeared right in front of you, would you choose to embrace him with open arms or to choose to shy away in shame?
